Timers

A timer allows you to record elapsed time. It works great for keeping track of time you are spending on tasks in order to know how long something took (handy when you need to record your time in a timesheet or for billing purposes).

To add a new timer to the current tab, click on Timers | Add Timer or use Ctrl+T.

You will find the following things on a timer:

  • Name – Enter a name into this textbox to help you identify the timer
  • Start/Stop – Starts or stops the timer
  • Reset – Resets the time on the timer back to 0. You can tell the application, in the options screen, to prompt you before resetting a timer if you want to avoid accidental loss of data.
  • Time Display – The actual elapsed time. The display format can be changed in the options screen or by using Ctrl+F to cycle through the available formats.
  • Note  – Clicking on the note allows you to record any additional notes about the timer. A green circle appears for any timer that has a note. Right clicking on the note allows you to perform additional functions on the note including clearing, copying or cutting the note.
  • Delete  – Clicking on the red “X” will delete the timer. You can tell the application, in the options screen, to prompt you before deleting a timer if you want to avoid accidental deletions.
  • Up and Down Arrows  – Clicking on the up and down arrows allows you to move the timer up and down the screen.

Timer Alerts

You can make use of alerts when you want to be notified while timing a task when a certain amount of time has elapsed.

To add an alert to a timer, right click on the time display and select “Add Alert”. The “Edit Timer Alert” screen will open. From this screen you can set the timer when the alert should fire, and what should happen when the time is reached.

You can tell when a timer has an alert defined for it because a small bell will appear in the time display.

To change or delete the alert, right click on the time display and choose “Edit Alert” or “Delete Alert”.

Countdowns

A countdown allows you to count down from a specified time to 0. You can use countdowns to remind you when a certain amount of time has elapsed (handy when it’s time to plug the parking meter, or go for your coffee break).

To add a new countdown to the current tab, click on Countdowns | Add Countdown or use Alt+C.

Countdowns are made up of the following:

  • Name – Enter a name into this textbox to help you identify the countdown
  • Start/Stop – Button that starts or stops the countdown
  • Reset – Resets the time on the timer back to the start time. You can tell the application, in the options screen, to prompt you before resetting a countdown if you want to avoid accidental loss of data.
  • Time Display – The remaining time. The display format can be changed in the options screen or by using Alt+F to cycle through the available formats.
  • Note  – Clicking on the note allows you to record any additional notes about the countdown. A green circle appears for any countdown that has a note. Right clicking on the note allows you to perform additional functions on the note including clearing, copying or cutting the note.
  • Delete  – Clicking on the red “X” will delete the countdown . You can tell the application, in the options screen, to prompt you before deleting a countdown if you want to avoid accidental deletions.
  • Up and Down Arrows  – Clicking on the up and down arrows allows you to move the countdown up and down the screen.
You can easily tell the difference between a countdown and a timer, as the countdown’s time display contains an alarm clock icon.

To specify the starting timer for your new countdown, right click on the time display and select “Set Time”. The “Set Time” screen will open. From this screen you can set the starting time and what should happen when time runs out.

Tabs

In order to keep your various timers and countdowns organized, you can create multiple tabs to store your timers and countdowns in. You could create different tabs for different clients, projects, days, etc.

When you first start WatchMe you will have a single tab. To add more tabs select “Add New Tab” from the System menu. From this menu you can also rename or delete existing tabs.

Tabs can be re-ordered by dragging and dropping the tabs on the screen.

If you want to show totals for your timers (Timers | Show Totals) you will see a grand total for all of your timers, and also a sub total for each tab.
